Freshwater versus saltwater surveying: Lake Wakatipu is a deep, cold, ultra-clear freshwater lake. Vessels that have spent their lives on the lake look very different from coastal vessels — no antifouling requirement, no saltwater corrosion, no osmosis risk. However, freshwater lakes create their own issues: UV exposure at altitude (310m ASL) is more intense, and some composite materials behave differently in freshwater. We adjust our survey process for the specific freshwater lake environment.
Lake Wakatipu's notorious squalls: Wakatipu is famous for its sudden, violent squalls — the 'Wakatipu blow' can bring wind from calm to 50 knots in minutes. Commercial vessels operating on the lake must handle these conditions safely. We assess stability, freeboard, and windage characteristics for commercial lake vessels as part of the survey process.
