We assess propulsion reliability, steering gear, and engine redundancy specifically for Sounds-based vessels that may need to transit through current-prone passages.

Nelson's commercial fishing environment: Port Nelson is New Zealand's busiest fishing port. Commercial fishing vessels face tough conditions — extended offshore passages in the Tasman Sea, heavy deck work, and demanding mechanical loads. Our survey process for commercial fishing vessels is substantially more detailed than for recreational craft.

Tasman Bay conditions: Tasman Bay can experience significant short-period chop in northerly conditions. Vessels fishing the Farewell Spit area experience more fatigue loading than vessels that stay in sheltered waters. Can you survey a vessel in the Marlborough Sounds?

Yes. We travel throughout the Marlborough Sounds for surveys — Queen Charlotte Sound, Pelorus Sound, Kenepuru, and the outer sounds anchorages. For vessels in remote locations, we can access by water if required. We typically batch multiple Sounds surveys per trip to keep travel costs manageable.

What's the difference between surveying in the Sounds versus Nelson Harbour?

Sounds-based vessels face different environmental stresses — tidal currents through narrows like French Pass, exposure to Cook Strait conditions at the outer sounds, and freshwater intrusion in the upper arms during heavy rain. We look for these specific factors: propulsion reliability for tidal passage work, freshwater contamination in fuel and water systems, and structural loading from extended coastal passage conditions.

How long does a Nelson marine survey take?

Trailer boats typically take 2–3 hours. Mid-size keelboats and launches take 4–5 hours. Commercial fishing vessels typically take a full day. All reports are delivered within 48 hours of survey completion.

Do you survey in Golden Bay?

Yes. Golden Bay — Takaka, Tata Beach, and the Farewell Spit area — is within our Nelson service area. We travel to Golden Bay for surveys, typically combining with other Nelson region bookings. Golden Bay's remote location and unique boating conditions (shallow harbour, exposed northern coast) are factors we specifically address in Golden Bay vessel surveys.

Can you arrange haul-out for a Nelson pre-purchase survey?

Yes. We typically coordinate haul-out at Nelson Marina's travel lift, which handles vessels up to approximately 50 tonnes. For larger vessels or those based in the Sounds, Havelock Marine provides haul-out facilities. We can manage this coordination on your behalf once the survey is booked.
