Wedding & Paine Marine are Auckland's most qualified marine surveyors — Class 1 Commercial Marine Engineers with 30+ years combined experience. Pre-purchase, insurance, and condition surveys across Westhaven, Waitemata Harbour, and the full Hauraki Gulf. Reports accepted by all major NZ insurers.
Auckland is New Zealand's largest boating city — over 135,000 registered recreational vessels in the greater Auckland region. Whether you're buying a keeler from Westhaven, insuring a commercial vessel on Waiheke Island, or arranging a Conditions of Class survey for a Hauraki Gulf charter operation, access to a genuinely qualified marine surveyor matters enormously.
Wedding & Paine Marine operate as Class 1 Commercial Marine Engineers — the highest practical qualification available to a NZ marine surveyor. Class 1 Commercial Engineers complete formal Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering training to international STCW standards. This is materially different from a 'marine surveyor' holding a short-course certificate.
We survey all vessel types across the Auckland region: trailer boats from Gulf Harbour Marina, keelboats and performance yachts at Westhaven, launches operating across the Waitemata, commercial charter vessels at Viaduct Harbour, and offshore bluewater cruisers departing from Half Moon Bay. From a 4.5m aluminium dinghy to a 25m commercial launch — no vessel type is outside our capability.
Osmotic blistering in GRP hulls: Auckland's warm water accelerates osmosis in fibreglass hulls kept afloat year-round. Vessels berthed continuously at Westhaven, Gulf Harbour, or Half Moon Bay are at elevated risk. We use calibrated moisture meters on every GRP hull and report moisture readings section by section.
Teredine (shipworm) in timber vessels: The Waitemata Harbour supports teredo navalis and limnoria populations. Timber-hulled vessels — particularly older kauri launches — should be surveyed with this risk in mind. Our surveys include fastening integrity checks and detailed hull plank assessment.
Electrolytic corrosion: The Westhaven and Viaduct Marina environment, with hundreds of vessels in close proximity and variable shore power quality, creates elevated stray current risk. Aluminium vessels and vessels with significant bronze fittings are particularly susceptible. We check bonding systems, zincs, and shaft/propeller corrosion as standard.
Weather window considerations: We coordinate survey timing with haul-out facilities including Gulf Harbour Boatyard, Orams Marine Services, and Riverhead to ensure proper out-of-water access where required.
Full structural, mechanical, electrical, and safety assessment before purchase. Essential in Auckland's active second-hand market. We coordinate haul-out at Orams Marine, Gulf Harbour Boatyard, or Riverhead. Reports delivered within 48 hours.
Required by Vero, Tower, NZI, State, and AMI for vessels over a certain age or value. Our Conditions of Survey reports are accepted by all major NZ marine insurers. We cover Westhaven, Half Moon Bay, Gulf Harbour, Bayswater, and all Hauraki Gulf locations.
Current market valuation and condition assessment for estate, finance, dispute, or export. We assess market value based on current Auckland listings, vessel condition, equipment inventory, and recent comparable sales.
Focused assessment of a known or suspected defect — structural damage, osmotic blistering, engine failure, electrical fault. Frequently required for insurance claims. We can mobilise quickly across Auckland for urgent assessments.
Survey and certification for commercial charter, fishing, and passenger vessels operating in Auckland waters and the Hauraki Gulf. Familiar with Maritime NZ requirements and Hauraki Gulf operating area classifications.
Pre-departure survey for vessels leaving Auckland for Pacific Island cruising, Fiji, Tonga, or beyond. Covers structural seaworthiness, safety equipment compliance, EPIRB registration, life raft certification, and offshore rigging assessment.
