Marine Survey Services in Wellington

Wellington Harbour is one of New Zealand's most dynamic and challenging marine environments. The Cook Strait — which Wellington vessels regularly cross — is internationally recognised as one of the most difficult stretches of water in the southern hemisphere, with strong tidal currents, frequent gale-force winds, and rapidly changing sea states.

Wedding & Paine Marine survey vessels across the full Wellington region — from Evans Bay Marina and Chaffers Marina on the waterfront, to Seaview Marina in Petone, Porirua Harbour, and vessels along the Kapiti Coast. We also survey vessels preparing for Cook Strait crossings to Picton and the Marlborough Sounds.

Wellington's marine market includes experienced offshore sailors, fishing vessel operators, and a strong community of trailer boat users operating in the harbour and around the south coast. Our survey capability covers all vessel types — from a 4-metre aluminium runabout to a 20-metre bluewater cruiser outbound for the Sounds.

Wellington Marine Environment — What Local Surveys Examine

Cook Strait structural loads: Vessels that regularly cross Cook Strait are subjected to significant structural loads — short, steep seas that stress hull-to-deck joints, chainplates, keel attachments, and rig components. We pay particular attention to these high-load areas on Wellington-based sailing vessels, looking for fatigue cracking, delamination, and chainplate corrosion.

Wind and corrosion exposure: Wellington's notorious wind creates a highly corrosive marine atmosphere. Stainless steel fittings that would last 15 years in Auckland may show significant pitting and crevice corrosion in 8–10 years in Wellington. We assess all deck hardware, rigging, and electrical connections with this environment in mind.

Harbour swell and mooring loads: Evans Bay and Chaffers Marina can experience significant swell during southerly conditions, putting abnormal load on mooring lines, cleats, and anchor points. We assess chafe, fatigue, and wear at all mooring points as part of the Wellington survey process.

Tidal current awareness: Wellington Harbour has complex tidal currents, particularly around the Heads. Vessels operating in these areas need reliable engines and steering — we give extra attention to propulsion system condition and engine hours for Wellington-based motorised vessels.

Wellington Marine Survey — Frequently Asked Questions

Is a marine survey required before crossing Cook Strait?
There is no legal requirement for a recreational vessel survey before crossing Cook Strait, but it is strongly recommended by Maritime New Zealand and most marine insurers. Many NZ insurers will not cover a Cook Strait crossing without a current survey confirming the vessel is fit for offshore operation. We can provide a Cook Strait passage assessment that specifically addresses the structural and mechanical requirements for this crossing.
How long does a Wellington marine survey take?
Most surveys take 3–6 hours. We coordinate haul-out at Seaview Marina for out-of-water surveys. In-water surveys are available at Evans Bay and Chaffers Marina for insurance renewals. Reports are delivered within 48 hours of survey completion.
Do you survey trailer boats in Wellington?
Yes. Trailer boats are the most common vessel type in the Wellington recreational fleet. We can survey trailer boats at a boatyard or at the owner's property if suitable hard-standing is available. Trailer boat surveys typically take 2–3 hours.
Can you survey vessels in the Marlborough Sounds?
Yes — we travel to the Marlborough Sounds for surveys. We typically schedule multiple Sounds surveys per trip to keep costs manageable. Contact us to discuss timing and whether other clients are scheduled in your area, which can reduce individual travel costs.
What specific things do you check on Wellington Harbour vessels?
Wellington's environment creates specific wear patterns: Cook Strait fatigue on hull-to-deck joints and chainplates; wind-related corrosion on stainless rigging and deck hardware; harbour swell wear on mooring cleats and bow rollers; and tidal current effects on propeller and shaft condition. These reflect genuine Wellington-specific failure modes we encounter regularly.
Do you cover the Kapiti Coast?
Yes. We cover the full greater Wellington region including the Kapiti Coast from Paekakāriki to Ōtaki. Vessels at Paremata, Mana Marina, and the Kapiti Coast are within our standard service area with no additional travel charge.
