Harbour sandbar and grounding damage: Tauranga Harbour's shifting sandbar has caught many vessels out. Ground strikes — even glancing contacts — can cause internal structural damage invisible from the outside: cracked frames, delamination, and keel bolt distortion. Any vessel with a Tauranga entrance history should have a thorough structural survey, including a tap test and careful keel area inspection.
GRP osmosis in warm water: The Bay of Plenty's warm coastal water temperatures accelerate osmotic blistering in fibreglass hulls kept afloat at Tauranga Bridge Marina or Sulphur Point. We use calibrated moisture meters on every GRP hull and provide section-by-section moisture readings in our reports.

This creates cumulative fatigue loading on hull-to-deck joints, stanchion bases, and mooring fittings. We assess these components carefully on harbour-moored vessels.
Volcanic ash and geothermal effects: The Bay of Plenty's proximity to the Taupo Volcanic Zone means vessels operating near White Island (Whakaari) can be exposed to sulphur compounds in the air and water. We check for unusual corrosion patterns on stainless fittings, exhaust systems, and underwater metals that may indicate geothermal exposure.
