Can you survey a vessel at Lyttelton Marina?

Yes. Lyttelton Marina is our primary Christchurch survey location. We can conduct in-water surveys at the marina for insurance renewals, or coordinate haul-out at the marina's travel lift for full out-of-water inspection. Lyttelton Marina's haul-out facility handles vessels up to approximately 60 tonnes.

Do you survey boats in Akaroa?

Yes. Akaroa Harbour has a growing fleet of resident vessels. We travel to Akaroa for surveys — given the drive time, we typically schedule multiple Akaroa surveys per visit. Contact us to discuss timing and whether other clients are scheduled in the Akaroa area, which can reduce individual travel costs.

What's the most common issue you find in Canterbury-based vessels?

In GRP vessels, osmosis is common — particularly in boats kept afloat at Lyttelton Marina long-term. In older timber vessels, we frequently find softening of the planking in the garboard strake area (near the keel), a common failure mode in cold southern waters. In sailing vessels, chainplate corrosion is a recurring finding — Canterbury's conditions are tough on stainless through-deck fittings.

Do you cover Kaikoura for marine surveys?

Yes. Kaikoura has a small but active fishing and recreational fleet. We travel to Kaikoura for surveys — typically combined with other Canterbury bookings. The Kaikoura coastline is exposed open coast, and we factor the more demanding operating environment into our assessment for locally based vessels.

How do I arrange haul-out in Christchurch for a pre-purchase survey?

We typically coordinate directly with Lyttelton Marina for haul-out. The marina has a travel lift that handles most recreational vessel sizes. We can make this arrangement on your behalf once the survey is booked. We require the vessel to be out of the water for at least 2 hours for a complete hull inspection.

Do you assess earthquake damage in older Canterbury vessels?

Yes. We are aware of the 2010–2011 earthquake history in the region and specifically look for signs of earthquake-related damage — keel distortion, hull-to-deck joint separation, and unusual stress cracking patterns that may indicate the vessel was impacted during the earthquake sequence.
