How long does a marine survey take in Auckland?

Most surveys take 3–6 hours depending on vessel size and complexity. A 10-metre keelboat typically takes 4 hours. A larger launch or commercial vessel may take a full day. Can you survey a vessel while it's in the water at Westhaven?

Yes — in-water surveys are possible and common for insurance renewals or condition assessments where haul-out isn't practical. However, for a pre-purchase survey we strongly recommend an out-of-water inspection. In-water surveys cannot assess the hull exterior below the waterline, keel attachment, running gear, or hull fittings below the waterline.

What's the difference between a Class 1 Marine Engineer and a regular marine surveyor?

Class 1 Commercial Marine Engineer (MNZ) is the highest engineering qualification issued by Maritime New Zealand. It requires formal training, examination, and sea service to STCW international standards. Many 'marine surveyors' in New Zealand hold short-course certificates rather than engineering qualifications. For a purchase decision of $100,000+, the difference in technical depth matters significantly.
